Lokahi Garden Sanctuary

Lokahi Garden Sanctuary is a sustainable working farm, garden sanctuary, and retreat center. Founded by Richard Liebmann, N.D. and Natalie Young, Lokahi Garden Sanctuary is dedicated to serving their Ohana (human family) by offering programs and practices that encourage Lokahi (harmony and balance within and without) and providing opportunities to experience an intimate relationship with the Aina (earth).
Located in historic North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii on 10 lush acres with sweeping ocean views and the island of Maui, Lokahi Garden Sanctuary includes extensive vegetable, medicinal and culinary herb gardens, fruit and nut orchards, and small tree forests that include native and “useful” trees. The sanctuary is also home to an active farm internship program where people live and learn about nurturing the soil, growing organic foods, caring for animals, and living sustainably.

Guided Farm Tour
We’ll meet and stroll through the lush gardens and orchards of my garden sanctuary, enjoying the tropical scents of cinnamon, allspice, jasmine, orange blossom, pua kenikeni, and more. I’ll acquaint you with over 250 different species of plants and trees, including extensive vegetable, medicinal, and culinary herb gardens, fruit and nut orchards, and small tree forests. You’ll learn how the sanctuary is also home to an active farm volunteer worker program, where people live and learn about growing organic foods, caring for animals, and living sustainably. We’ll enjoy refreshing garden tea and fresh fruit while we gaze out over the rolling pastures and the deep blue Pacific Ocean to the island of Maui. Kids will love playing fetch with Kahu, our border collie.
A short message with Dr. Richard:
“I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 1979 to practice naturopathic medicine. For the past 20 years, I have focused on creating Lokahi Garden Sanctuary, a place of health and wellness. I built the sanctuary center, and planted extensive vegetable gardens, fruit and nut orchards and many medicinal plants. I’ve planted over 250 different plant species and over 800 trees. I so enjoy sharing my passion of organic farming and living sustainability.”
